Quick answer: Butterfly Knives can come out of Operation Breakout, Spectrum, Spectrum 2, Operation Riptide and Dreams & Nightmares. Those are the five cases on the list. A gold from Breakout will be a Butterfly. Open one of the other four and a Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman or Shadow Daggers could take its place. Breakout has the original finishes, the Spectrum pair has Chroma finishes, and the Riptide/Dreams & Nightmares pair has Gamma finishes.
Say you are looking for a Butterfly Doppler. Breakout may sound tempting because it cannot give you another knife model, but it cannot give you Doppler either. You would need one of the Spectrum cases for that finish.
Original, Chroma and Gamma Butterfly Knife finishes come from different case pools.
All Butterfly Knife Cases at a Glance
Butterfly Knives occupy the gold rare-special slot in all five cases. Only Breakout makes the model certain when you reach that slot. The table separates that single-model pool from the four shared pools.
| Case | Knife Model Pool | Finish Style |
|---|---|---|
| Operation Breakout | Butterfly only | Original finishes |
| Spectrum | Butterfly, Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman, Shadow Daggers | Chroma families |
| Spectrum 2 | Butterfly, Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman, Shadow Daggers | Chroma families |
| Operation Riptide | Butterfly, Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman, Shadow Daggers | Gamma families |
| Dreams and Nightmares | Butterfly, Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman, Shadow Daggers | Gamma families |
For a Butterfly Fade, the list narrows to Breakout. For a Butterfly Doppler, it narrows to Spectrum or Spectrum 2. Neither the price of the case nor how often you open it can put an absent finish into its pool.
Operation Breakout Weapon Case
With Breakout, reaching gold settles the model question. It might be a finish you like or one you would never have bought, with wear and a resale price you did not choose. Most openings will not reach that slot in the first place.
The Breakout list is Vanilla, Fade, Slaughter, Case Hardened, Crimson Web, Blue Steel, Boreal Forest, Forest DDPAT, Night, Safari Mesh, Scorched, Stained and Urban Masked. There is plenty of variation among those originals: a plain blade, camouflage, webs and the much brighter Fade.
Fade and Marble Fade are easy names to mix up. Only the first is in Breakout. Marble Fade is a Chroma finish, as is Doppler, so neither can be the result of a Breakout opening.
If the model matters more to you than which original finish appears, Breakout is the focused option. If you already have a precise skin in mind, check the finish list first: a guaranteed Butterfly model on a gold roll is not a guaranteed Butterfly Fade.
Spectrum and Spectrum 2 Cases
Spectrum Case
A Spectrum gold can be any of these five models: Butterfly, Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman and Shadow Daggers. For the Butterfly specifically, the available finishes are Doppler, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth, Damascus Steel, Rust Coat and Ultraviolet. These are what collectors mean by the Chroma group.
Spectrum 2 Case
Spectrum 2 changes the ordinary weapon skins, not the knives. Its five models and Chroma finishes match Spectrum, so switching between the pair will not add another Butterfly finish to the possibilities.
That gives you two cases to compare when you want a Chroma Butterfly. Look at the cost of each case and the ordinary skins you might receive, since those are the differences you are paying for.
The trade-off with Breakout is specific, not a general improvement in rewards. Spectrum adds the Chroma finishes, but also adds four other knife models that can take the gold slot instead of a Butterfly.
Operation Riptide and Dreams & Nightmares Cases
Operation Riptide Case
Riptide brought the Gamma set to the Butterfly: Gamma Doppler, Lore, Autotronic, Black Laminate, Freehand and Bright Water. You can also receive those finishes on a Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman or Shadow Daggers from the same case.
Dreams & Nightmares Case
Dreams & Nightmares carried over the Riptide rare-special pool. The weapon skins inside are different, but the five knife models and their Gamma finish families are the same.
Shared Knife Model Pool
A gold result from either case could be a Butterfly, Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman or Shadow Daggers. Unlike Breakout, neither offers a Butterfly-only gold slot. Keep the other four outcomes in mind before spending on repeated openings.
Gamma Finish Families
In both Riptide and Dreams & Nightmares, Gamma means six finish families: Gamma Doppler, Lore, Autotronic, Black Laminate, Freehand and Bright Water. Gamma Doppler includes its numbered phases and the Emerald variant.
The looks vary a lot within that group. Gamma Doppler is the choice for green reflective color, including Emerald; Lore uses gold detailing, and Autotronic puts red against metal. For something less reflective, there is the dark Black Laminate or the blue camouflage of Bright Water. Freehand goes in another direction with its drawn markings.
Neither case has a Butterfly finish missing from the other. Unless you prefer one of their ordinary weapon skins, compare what the cases cost before choosing between them.
Have a particular finish in mind? Compare individual knives by their wear and price before you commit to opening cases.

Find the finish you want below, then look across to its cases. This is useful for similarly named finishes: Doppler goes with Spectrum, whereas Gamma Doppler goes with Riptide or Dreams & Nightmares.
| Finish Type | Cases | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Original Finishes | Operation Breakout | Classic finishes: fade, slaughter, case hardened |
| Chroma Families | Spectrum, Spectrum 2 | Doppler, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth, Damascus Steel, Rust Coat, Ultraviolet |
| Gamma Families | Operation Riptide, Dreams & Nightmares | Gamma Doppler, Lore, Autotronic, Black Laminate, Freehand, Bright Water |
Original Butterfly Knife Finishes
Operation Breakout is the source for the original Butterfly Knife finishes, including Vanilla, Fade, Slaughter, Case Hardened, Crimson Web, Blue Steel, Boreal Forest, Forest DDPAT, Night, Safari Mesh, Scorched, Stained, and Urban Masked.
Chroma Butterfly Knife Finishes
For Doppler, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth, Damascus Steel, Rust Coat or Ultraviolet, either Spectrum case works. The second case did not add a different Chroma Butterfly to the list.
Gamma Butterfly Knife Finishes
The six Gamma choices are Gamma Doppler, Lore, Autotronic, Black Laminate, Freehand and Bright Water. You can find the whole group in either Riptide or Dreams & Nightmares.
Case age does not move a finish to a different pool. That is why someone looking for Case Hardened still needs Breakout, while someone after Lore needs Riptide or Dreams & Nightmares.
Butterfly Knife skins include very different looks, from darker original skins to bright Doppler phases. Picking the finish first saves you considering cases that cannot produce it at all.
What Are the Odds of Unboxing a Butterfly Knife?
For gold results, the commonly quoted rounded rate is 0.26%, about 1 in 385 openings. With Breakout, every gold is a Butterfly, so the same rate applies to getting that model. It does not work that way for Spectrum or the other shared-pool cases, where gold might give you a different model.
Rare Special Item Tier Explained
There are two questions here: did the opening reach gold, and what item came from that gold pool? Breakout answers the model question in advance because its pool contains only Butterfly Knives. The four shared-pool cases do not.
Why You Cannot Calculate Exact Butterfly Odds
There may be five models in the pool, but the item you want is more specific than a model name. A calculation for one finish or phase needs the weights of those individual outcomes as well. Dividing gold by five does not establish that result.
The published CS2 case odds tell you how often the rarity tiers occur. To turn that into a probability for one exact Butterfly skin, you would also need the probabilities within its rare-special pool.
Breakout therefore has the simplest model target, but it cannot provide every Butterfly finish. To open a Doppler or a Gamma Doppler, you have to use a case whose gold pool also contains other knife models.
Is It Better to Open a Case or Buy the Knife?
If you already know the skin you want, its listing shows you the actual item and the asking price. You can inspect it before deciding whether to buy. An opening costs a case and key each time and may return an ordinary weapon skin. There is also a five-Covert contract: if all five eligible inputs belong to the Breakout Collection, its Butterfly-only pool makes the model certain. That still leaves the finish and other attributes uncertain.
Three Ways to Get a Rare Knife Outcome
| Route | Cost Control | Outcome Certainty | Best Fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Case opening | Limited: every attempt consumes another case and key | You may receive an ordinary weapon skin rather than any knife | Opening for entertainment, with a fixed spending limit |
| Direct purchase | The listing gives you a price before you commit | Inspect the actual model, finish, wear and StatTrak status | Looking for a particular Butterfly skin |
| October 2025 Covert trade-up | You can price the five inputs, but not choose the outcome | Breakout-only eligible inputs fix the model as Butterfly, not its finish or wear | Comfortable pricing inputs and checking every possible output |
Five regular Covert items can produce a regular knife or gloves from a represented input collection; five StatTrak Covert items produce a StatTrak knife. Using five eligible Breakout Collection Coverts restricts the result to its Butterfly-only pool. Mixing collections or using a shared knife pool removes that model guarantee. None of these recipes guarantees a profit.
Case opening is the least predictable route. Even after reaching the rare-special tier, a shared pool can produce another knife model. The choice of case should follow its contents and your budget, not an expectation of profit.
Direct purchase removes most uncertainty. A buyer can browse Butterfly Knife listings, compare finishes and wear values, and select the exact item that fits a planned budget. A direct CS2 trade also makes the exchange value visible before completion, which is useful when cost control matters more than randomness.
Choosing the Right Route
If you would be disappointed by anything except one exact knife, buying that copy avoids repeated random attempts. Set a spending limit before opening cases or using a contract. A valuable Butterfly in the possible rewards is not a promise that you will get it, or even get back what you spent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Dreams & Nightmares considered a Butterfly Knife case?
It carried over the knives from Operation Riptide, including the Butterfly. The rest of that rare pool is Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman and Shadow Daggers, all using the same Gamma finish group.
Is the rare knife from Operation Breakout always a Butterfly Knife?
Yes, if you get a rare-special gold result. Breakout contains no other knife model, although the Butterfly finish can vary and most openings give you a regular weapon skin instead.
Which cases can drop a Gamma Doppler Emerald Butterfly Knife?
Operation Riptide and Dreams & Nightmares. Emerald is one of the Gamma Doppler variants in their shared pool; it is not part of the ordinary Doppler group in Spectrum.
Do Spectrum and Spectrum 2 have different Butterfly Knife finishes?
No. Either can produce the same Doppler, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth, Damascus Steel, Rust Coat and Ultraviolet Butterfly finishes. Their non-knife weapon skins are different.
Does a more expensive case improve the chance of a Butterfly Knife?
No. Paying more for a case does not change its gold chance, commonly rounded to 0.26% or about 1 in 385. What changes your possible Butterfly result is the contents of that case, not the amount you paid for it.
Can a rented case item be a Butterfly Knife?
No, rentals leave out the rare-special items. Renting gives access to the regular weapon skins in the case, not its Butterfly Knives or other gold results.
Do Butterfly Knives require a special key?
There is no Butterfly-specific key. Use the normal key required by the case you are opening. It will not change that case’s finishes or make a Butterfly more likely.
