Wood Wall Rust: Durability & Breaking Guide

New blog post - Tradeit.gg

In Rust, base building is everything. And if you’re just starting out, wood walls are probably your first line of defense. They’re easy to place, cheap to craft, but also—let’s be real—they won’t hold forever. I’ve learned that the hard way.

So, let’s go over how durable wood walls actually are, how they break, and what you need to take them down (or defend against someone trying to).

Wood Wall Durability – How Much Can It Take?

Wood Wall Rust

Wood walls in Rust have 250 HP. That might sound like a lot early game, but compared to stone (500 HP) and metal (1,000 HP), it’s not much.

Here’s the thing though: it matters which side you’re hitting.

  • Soft Side (the inside, smooth-looking surface) takes 1.5x more damage from melee and tools.
  • Hard Side (the rough, plank-heavy outside) is way tougher and barely takes damage from hand tools.

This means if you’re placing wood walls, always make sure the hard side faces out. If you don’t, someone with just a rock could get inside.

How to Break a Wood Wall in Rust

If you’re raiding—or just need to remove a misplaced wall—you’ve got a few options.

1. Tools & Melee Weapons (Best for Soft Side)

If you’re up close, the best melee tool to break a wood wall is:

  • Salvaged Axe20-30 hits on the soft side will take it down.

Other options:

  • Stone Hatchet – Slow but works if that’s all you have.
  • Metal Pickaxe – Better than nothing, but not the best for walls.

Melee works only if you hit the soft side. Hitting the hard side is basically useless unless you have hours to waste.

2. Fire (Best Early-Game Raiding Method)

Fire absolutely melts wood walls. A single Molotov deals 180 damage, meaning two of them will break a wood wall completely.

Other fire methods:

  • Flame Thrower – Around 30 fuel will burn it down.
  • Fire Arrows – Not as efficient, but decent if you’re desperate.

Fire is cheap, quiet, and effective for early-game raids. If you’re on defense, a wood base is a fire magnet, so upgrade as soon as possible.

3. Explosives (If You Just Want It Gone)

If you’re stacked and just need a wood wall gone immediately, C4, satchels, or rockets work—but let’s be honest, they’re a waste on wood.

You should save those for stone or metal.

How to Create a Wood Wall in Rust

Building a wood wall in Rust is simple and one of the first steps to securing your base. Here’s how to craft and place one correctly.

1. Gather the Materials

To build a wood wall, you’ll need:

  • 1,000 Wood – Can be collected using a hatchet or chainsaw.
  • Building Plan – Crafted with 20 Wood at a workbench or from inventory.
  • Hammer – Crafted with 100 Wood (used to upgrade and rotate walls).

2. Place the Wall Correctly

Once you have the materials:

  • Equip the Building Plan and select “Wall” from the menu.
  • Aim at the foundation and left-click to place it.
  • Rotate the Wall before it hardens (using the Hammer) to ensure the rough, hard side faces outward.
  • Use a Tool Cupboard (TC) to prevent others from modifying or building near your walls.

3. Upgrade the Wall

Wood walls are temporary, so upgrading them is crucial. Use the Hammer to upgrade:

  • Stone Wall (Upgrade Cost: 300 Stone) – Fire-resistant, harder to raid.
  • Sheet Metal Wall (150 Metal Fragments) – Stronger but weak to explosives.
  • Armored Wall (25 High-Quality Metal) – The most durable but expensive.

Tip: If you’re in an active raid area, consider skipping wood and building straight to stone. Wood bases are a fire hazard and attract raiders early on.

How to Defend Your Wood Walls

If you’re stuck with a wood base, here’s how to make it last longer:

  1. Upgrade ASAP – Even just switching to stone makes raiding way harder for early-game players.
  2. Honeycomb – Adding extra layers forces raiders to spend more resources.
  3. Metal Doors – Most raiders don’t go through walls first—they go for doors. A metal door on a wood base is still better than an all-wood structure.

Final Thoughts

Wood walls are great for early game, but they don’t last. If you don’t upgrade them fast, they’ll burn down faster than you can say “who’s throwing Molotovs at my base?”

If you’re raiding, fire is your best bet—cheap, quiet, and effective. If you’re defending, upgrade to stone before someone makes your base their next target.

Rust is brutal. But hey, that’s what makes it fun.

FAQs

How to break a wooden wall in Rust?

Wooden walls can be destroyed using melee weapons, tools, or explosives. Fire damage from Molotovs or flamethrowers is highly effective, while spears and satchels also work. Attacking the soft side of the wall (inside) deals much more damage than the hard side.

How many spears to break a wood wall in Rust?

It takes around 200 wooden spears or 50 stone spears to break a wooden wall. This makes it an extremely slow and inefficient method unless done in a group. Attacking the soft side reduces the number needed.
