Rust Oil Refinery Locations

New blog post - Tradeit.gg

If you’re playing Rust and you’re not refining Crude Oil, you’re probably buying Low Grade off someone who is.

There’s this question that always comes up early:
Where’s the best place to refine oil in Rust?

You can craft a refinery later, sure. But early game? You’re working with pre-placed static refineries — the ones baked into monuments.

This guide breaks down where to find oil refineries in Rust, how I choose between safe and risky options, and what I actually do at each spot.

TL;DR – Best Oil Refinery Locations in Rust

MonumentRefinery CountPvP RiskNotes
Outpost1+★☆☆☆☆Safest, no combat allowed
Dome2★★☆☆☆Easy to access, no keycards
Harbor (Large/Small)1–2★★☆☆☆Early-game friendly, coastal
Sewer Branch1★★☆☆☆Hidden, requires Green Card
Trainyard / Power Plant1+★★★★☆Mid-to-high tier, PvP likely
Launch Site1★★★★★High loot, high danger

Safe Rust Oil Refinery Locations

Here, you can just fuel and chill:

1. Outpost – Best Safe Refinery in Rust

Outpost

If you just want guaranteed fuel with no surprises, Outpost is the move. It’s a safe zone, so nobody can kill you while you’re refining. I go here when I’m playing solo or just want to get things done without risk.

Why I like it:

  • Always has a refinery near the recycler.
  • No PvP inside the safe zone.
  • Easy to find, always labeled on the map.

Only downside? It gets crowded. If you see smoke, someone’s already refining — and there might be people lurking just outside the zone. But hey! There are Blue keycards for grabs!

2. Dome – Two Refineries, Zero Card Swipes

Dome

Dome has two refineries, both on ground level. No climbing needed unless you want loot.

When I want quick Low Grade and I’m not near Outpost, Dome is my go-to.
Just walk the perimeter, find the metal sheds, toss in Crude + Wood, and wait.

Keep in mind:

  • PvP can happen here, but it’s usually manageable.
  • Be careful near the top — players love to camp the high ground.
  • Good barrel spawns nearby for more Crude Oil.

3. Harbor – Chill and Coastal

Harbor

Whether it’s Large Harbor or Small Harbor, there’s usually a refinery.

They’re often near the docks or behind warehouse buildings. I use Harbor a lot in early wipe when I don’t have cards or gear yet.

Why it works:

  • Low radiation.
  • Decent cover.
  • Usually not worth fighting over, so it stays quiet.

Pro tip: Sometimes Small Harbor has the refinery near the recycler dock — makes it a quick in-and-out.

Mid-Risk Rust Oil Refinery Locations

A bit more reward, and a bit more danger lurks here:

1. Sewer Branch – Lowkey and Card-Gated

Rust Sewer Branch Gate

If I’ve got a Green Card and a fuse, I’ll go to Sewer Branch. The refinery is hidden underground, past a puzzle door. Not everyone bothers with it, which is exactly why I like it.

Here’s how I use it:

  • Bring a fuse + Green Card.
  • Activate the switch aboveground.
  • Enter the tunnels and head to the puzzle room — that’s where the refinery sits.

Feels safer than Dome, but slower. Great if you want some peace and don’t mind the extra steps (the Sewer Branch Puzzle).

2. Water Treatment – Decent Access, Medium Risk

Water Treatment

Water Treatment in Rust can have one or even two refineries, usually near the tall silos or red warehouse. The layout is pretty open, so I make sure to scout the area first.

If I’m already farming barrels or doing the puzzle here, I’ll refine while I’m at it. Just know that other players often roam through.

High-Risk Rust Oil Refinery Locations

If you’re geared and confident, these are the spots to go for:

1. Trainyard / Power Plant – Refine While You Loot

Trainyard / Power Plant

These are loot-heavy, PvP-heavy monuments. If I’m already in the area doing crates or puzzles, I’ll drop off Crude to refine. But I don’t come here just for fuel — not worth it unless you’re ready to fight.

Here’s what I’ve learned about Train Yard in Rust:

  • Always bring meds and at least a mid-tier kit.
  • Check refinery areas first — people love to camp them.
  • Don’t overcommit. I’ve left mid-refine more than once when shots rang out.

2. Launch Site – Maximum Reward, Maximum Risk

Launch Site

There’s a refinery here, but I’ll be honest: I rarely use it.

Radiation, Scientists, Bradley, PvP — it’s not a place to casually refine oil. I’ve only used this spot when I had teammates, good gear, and a solid reason to be there.

Unless your base is nearby or you control the monument, it’s usually not worth it just for Low Grade.

How to Find Oil Refineries in Rust (Without Guessing)

Even though maps change every wipe, here’s how I always track down refinery locations:

  1. Press G to open your in-game map.
  2. Look for monument icons like Dome, Outpost, Harbor.
  3. Follow roads — most monuments spawn near them.
  4. Use visual cues:
    • Dome = big metal sphere
    • Harbor = cranes
    • Launch = rocket
    • Power Plant = cooling towers

If I have a minicopter, I’ll scout from the air — it’s way easier to spot refinery sheds that way.

Some Oil Refinery Tips

While these are usually common sense for the veteran player, refreshing your memory can still help:

  • Watch for smoke – If the refinery’s active, it’ll puff out smoke. That’s your sign someone’s there (or was).
  • Check inventory before refining – If you see leftover Crude or Fuel, someone might be coming back.
  • Bring the right amount – Don’t refine a full stack unless it’s safe. I do 100–250 Crude at a time unless I’m at Outpost.
  • Don’t forget the Charcoal – It builds up in the output slot. I use it later for Gunpowder.

Long-Term Move => Build Your Own

Once you’re settled with a Tier 2 bench, I always recommend crafting a Small Oil Refinery for your base. That way, you don’t need to risk public spots or wait in line.

Craft cost:

  • 500 Metal Frags
  • 250 Wood
  • 75 Low Grade Fuel

Install it inside your compound or a refinery-specific base. Way safer.

Final Thoughts

Knowing where to find Oil Refineries in Rust makes early game so much smoother. I usually start with Outpost or Harbor, then work in Dome or Sewer Branch once I’ve got better gear. Late wipe, I build my own and don’t even bother with public ones.

FAQs

Where are most of the oil refineries located in Rust?

Most static oil refineries are found inside larger monuments like Dome, Outpost, Harbor, Trainyard, Water Treatment, Power Plant, and Sewer Branch. You won’t find them randomly in the wild — always look for them as part of a monument layout.

Is there an oil refinery in Sewer Branch?

Yes. The refinery is located underground, behind a puzzle-locked door that requires a Green Keycard and a fuse. It’s one of the quieter spots to refine if you’ve got the access gear.

Where is the oil refinery in Outpost?

The Outpost refinery is found inside the safe zone, usually near the recycler and repair bench. You can safely refine here without risk of PvP, but keep an eye out just outside the safe zone — it’s a common ambush spot.

Where is the oil refinery at Harbor in Rust?

The refinery at Harbor is usually located near the dock or behind one of the main warehouse buildings. Exact placement depends on whether it’s a Small or Large Harbor variant, but both typically have one refinery somewhere near the center or water-facing side of the monument.
