How to Get the Frying Pan in TF2?

New blog post - Tradeit.gg

The frying pan is one of my favorite melee weapons in Team Fortress 2. Not only is it incredibly satisfying to hear that iconic CLANG when smacking enemies, but it’s also a versatile all-class melee weapon (except for Engineer and Spy). Here’s my comprehensive guide on how to get your hands on this beloved kitchen utensil turned weapon.

Main Methods to Obtain the Frying Pan

1. Purchase Left 4 Dead 2

The original and most straightforward method I used:

  • Buy Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam (currently $9.99, but often on sale for $1.99)
  • Launch the game at least once to receive the pan as a promotional item
  • Open TF2 and you’ll find the pan in your inventory

Pro tip: Wait for a Steam sale – L4D2 regularly drops to 80-90% off during major sales events!

2. Trading with Other Players

If you don’t want to buy L4D2, I’ve found trading to be quite effective:

Trading MethodCurrent ValueProsCons
Direct Metal Trade2-3 refined metalQuick, commonSlightly overpriced
Item SwapEquivalent itemsNo currency neededFinding match can be hard
Key Fraction~0.15 keysProfessional traders prefer thisRequires key breaking

Where to trade:

  • backpack.tf – Check current prices and find sellers
  • scrap.tf – Automated trading bots
  • TF2 Trading servers – In-game trading communities

3. Random Drops (Special Events)

During certain special events and Halloween, I’ve seen the pan drop:

  • Full Moon events occasionally feature special drops
  • Smissmas (TF2 Christmas event) sometimes includes promotional items
  • Special community events may feature the pan as a prize

Note: This method is unreliable and based entirely on luck and timing.

What Makes the Frying Pan Special?

After using the pan for hundreds of hours, I’ve noticed these benefits:

  1. Sound Advantage – The distinct sound is louder than other melee weapons, making it harder for enemies to sneak up on you
  2. All-Class Weapon – Can be equipped by 7 out of 9 classes (all except Engineer and Spy)
  3. Identical Stats – Performs exactly like stock melee weapons, but with style
  4. Community Status – Instantly recognizable as a TF2 classic item

Frying Pan Variants

Final Tips

  • Name and Description Tags work great on pans for personalization
  • Professional Killstreak Kits can be applied for fancy effects
  • Consider the volume – continuous pan sounds can give away your position
  • The pan looks identical from both teams’ perspectives (unlike some weapons)

FAQs

Is the frying pan tradable if I get it from Left 4 Dead 2?

If you received your pan from L4D2 before approximately 2013, it should be tradable. However, pans obtained from L4D2 after that date are typically marked as “Not Tradable.” Unfortunately, there’s no way to remove this restriction.

What are the odds of getting a Golden Frying Pan?

The odds are extremely low, estimated at around 0.05% per completed Mann Up MvM tour. Most players never see one drop even after hundreds of tours. I don’t recommend pursuing this method unless you’re willing to spend hundreds of dollars with no guarantee.

Which class works best with the frying pan?

The pan works identically to stock melee weapons for each class. However, I’ve had the most fun using it with:
Demoknight (the charge + pan combo is hilarious)
Scout (fast attack speed makes for great pan sounds)
Heavy (the unexpected switch from minigun to kitchenware confuses enemies)

Can I use the frying pan with every class?

No, the frying pan can be equipped by 7 out of 9 classes. Engineer and Spy cannot use the frying pan as they have class-specific melee weapons with unique functions.

Does the frying pan have any gameplay advantages?

Statistically, no. It has identical damage and swing speed to stock melee weapons. However, its loud sound can alert teammates to nearby enemies, which can be situationally useful.

Can I customize my frying pan?

Yes! You can apply Name Tags, Description Tags, and Professional Killstreak Kits to your frying pan. You cannot, however, paint it or apply unusual effects directly.
