CS:GO is one of the most popular video games in the world. More than 10 million people play it regularly and thousands more join every day. However, Macs are also popular devices these days and have been for many years. So, CS:GO for Mac: what to know?
This often leads to a situation in which someone who doesn’t have a standard PC may want to play CS:GO. And the question is: can it be done?
Things to Know About CS:GO for Mac
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was launched in the year 2012. Since then, the game has been improved considerably but the recommended system requirements haven’t gone up that much.
CS:GO System Requirements
- GPU: Any video card with 256 MB of VRAM or higher
- RAM: 8 GB of memory
- HDD: 25 GB of free space
- CPU: Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6600 2.4 GHz or AMD Phenom™ X3 8750 2.4 GHz processor
- OS: Windows XP or higher operating system
- DirectX: 9.0c or higher
- Shader Model: 3.0 or higher
These requirements are important because when you play the game on a Mac, you will need to make sure that your Mac has good enough specs to run the game. If you’ve had it for less than 7-8 years, that shouldn’t be a problem.
How to Play CS:GO on a Mac
If you want to play CS:GO on a Mac, you have a few options.
Download the Mac Version of CS:GO from Steam
CS:GO doesn’t just have a PC version. It’s also available for Mac users and you can easily install it using Steam. Furthermore, you should know that the standard version of the game is free to play. This means that all you need to do is install it and then run it with your preferred settings.
These days, companies like Nvidia will give you the possibility to play video games on a cloud server that’s much better than your own PC. And you can play games this way for anywhere between $10 – $50 per month, non-stop.
The options are numerous and the PCs you’ll get to play on have exceptional specs. Therefore, if you’ve always wanted to play CS:GO but never had a good enough PC or Mac, today that’s no longer a problem.
How CS:GO Is Played
CS:GO is a first-person shooter that’s played competitively. You are part of a team of 5 and compete against another team of 5 players. The game takes place on a variety of maps but the goal is the same each time.
The two teams, Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists have diametrically opposed objectives and each round of the map is around 2-3 minutes long.
The Terrorists need to eliminate the entire enemy team or plant the bomb at one of the two available locations (A and B) and protect it until it explodes.
The Counter-Terrorists need to eliminate the entire enemy team or prevent the bomb from exploding if it was planted. If the Terrorists did not manage to plant the bomb, the round is won by the CT side.
CS:GO is very fun to play but it’s extremely challenging. You need to master around half a dozen maps and 10 different weapons. Of course, the game is even more complex than that and has numerous options, but this is the minimum that you will need to understand if you want to achieve a high rank.
There are 18 ranks in total and the highest one is Global Elite. Only a tiny percentage of players reach this rank and it usually takes anywhere between 5,000 and 15,000 to attain the competence required to compete at that level.
Playing CS:GO on Other Devices
These days, CS:GO is played not only on a PC or a Mac but also on a Steam Deck. Valve decided to create their own handheld device and the experience is quite interesting. However, if you want to reach a high competitive level, you should stick to playing on a device that allows you to use a mouse and a keyboard.
CS:GO is a highly complex game with lots of subtle moves that you need to make in a fraction of a second to be successful. Players invest in an expensive gaming mouse, a high-quality keyboard, professional headphones, and top quality-monitors. In other words, they do everything they can to gain an advantage.
When you play on other devices, you tend to place yourself in a bad position because those devices may not be as good as a computer when it comes to input methods. When you play on a PC, your mouse is perfect for aiming quickly and CS:GO was designed to utilize this device to its full capacity.
The game’s settings are also designed with competitive play in mind and can give you an edge when competing against high-level players. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t play on a Steam Deck. Just don’t expect optimal results.
